However, since the very beginning, experts had maintained that ChatGPT in its currently available form is just the tip of the iceberg when to comes to realizing the true potential of the GPT model released by OpenAI. This prediction showed signs of bearing fruit when those with paid subscription to GPT Plus were allowed to use the ChatGPT APIs to customise the model to their specific use cases.

From improving the model’s ability of handling mathematical queries, to specific writing patterns to creating customised chatbots trained in hyper specific data sets, the opportunities for developers, users and enterprises started to look endless. And with the launch of OpenAI’s GPT Store the full potential of the AI technology is likely to be realised finally.

The GPT Store project from OpenAI was supposed to be released to the public much earlier, however, the launch was delayed by the company because of the turmoil caused by the firing and then rehiring of CEO Sam Altman in the latter half of 2023.

In essence, the GPT Store is also modelled similar to the smartphone app stores that we are familiar with where third party offerings would be listed for users to download and use for themselves. The difference being that in the GPT store, the commodity being offered would be tweaked versions of ChatGPT.

The store is accessible only to ChatGPT Plus subscribers. Other features of ChatGPT like the latest GPT-4 model and the web browsing capability are also included in the ChatGPT Plus subscription bundle, priced $20 per month. ChatGPT Plus subscribers would also be allowed to create and upload their own GPTs. The company has noted the use of GPT here refers to the custom and unique versions of ChatGPT with additional parameters and additional training data. So it is true that users can already create and upload their unique GPTs on the store and OpenAI has confirmed that users will be paid for purchase of their versions based on the number of downloads.

However, before anyone jumps into trying to create and upload a custom GPT, there are some important aspects that one should to consider.

To start with, you will have to create a custom GPT before you can upload it to the store. But the good thing is that you do not need any specialised coding knowledge or technical know-how to create a custom GPT. Just by navigating the interface and by adding training documents to the model, you can create a unique GPT model. For example, if you want to create a GPT that writes using your phrasing and tone, you can upload sample files of texts that you have written to train the GPT model. But when uploading such files, remember that if you make your custom GPT public, there is a chance (however small) that the files that you uploaded could get leaked some day. Therefore, make sure that the files that you upload do not have any sensitive information in them.

Once you have created your GPT, you can now publish it for public listing. To do this, all you need to do is go to the home screen of Chat GPT and choose the explore GPTs option on the left side of the screen. From there select My GPTs on the top right-hand side of the screen. Now, hover over the GPT that you want to list publicly and click on the pencil icon to edit the GPT. You can now run a final check on the output of your GPT using the Preview section and if you are satisfied with it, click on the Save option in the right corner. From the drop down menu, click on Everyone (for public listing) and then click confirm.

Et Voila! You have published your own GPT. But it is important to remember that there are some strict rules that you have to follow when you create and list a GPT on your own. One of the most important things is that, you are not allowed to create a GPT for “romantic companionships” as there is a ban on such GPTs that encourage intimate human-AI interactions. You also are not allowed to create a GPT that can impersonate other celebrities without their consent. There is also a ban on listing GPTs that are designed for academic cheating. OpenAi’s website has a detailed list of what is and isn’t allowed on the store, do go through it before listing your own GPT.

Now, before you start on creating your own GPT, you should first go to the GPT Store and browse through the listed options for the purpose that you want to create a GPT for. Look and the options there and see what they are offering and what is the value that you can add. What is the value addition that you can provide for users that the existing apps are not providing. Once you have all the answers, then start on your creative journey to create the best AI chat bot that you can.
